Below is an approximation of the homily that I preached Sunday February 3rd at the 9 AM and 11 AM Mass at St Luke the Evangelist in Slidell . This homily is based on the readings for fourth Sunday in Ordinary time. You may want to read over these first before reading the homily.:

Jer 1:4-5, 17-19

Ps 71:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 15-17

1 Cor 12:31—13:13 or 13:4-13

Lk 4:21-30

Most of us are familiar with the phrase “Don’t kill the messenger” or “don’t shoot the messenger.”  We use it to mean, “Hey, I am just the bearer of the news. Don’t get mad at me.”  Well in the ancient world, killing or harming the messenger was a real issue.  Until the development of modern means of communication, personal messengers were the most common way to communicate between national rulers or among opposing armies.
