From time to time I read something that is so simple, clear, and powerful that I think to myself "Wow!  I wish I had written that."

This morning, I read such an article by Msgr. Charles Pope.  Msgr. Pope is a very active writer, blogger and social media commentator.  His Facebook page can be found  by clicking this link and one of his blogs may be found here.  I sometimes read Msgr. Pope's writings as background for preparing my own homilies.

Msgr Pope, the pastor of Holy Comforter St Cyprian Parish in the Archdiocese of Washington has a no nonsense, call 'em likes he sees 'em style.

The recent mass shooting in Orlando has again raised the clarion call to "do something." That something is generally translated into gun control by the media and most on the progressive side of political ideology.  Which of course raises the protest from those on the conservative end of the political spectrum.

You can't take my guns away.  Its my right under the second amendment.

In actuality, the second amendment says nothing about guns.   It refers to "Arms" - any sort of weapon.

The following is an approximation of the homily I delivered at the 9 and 11:00 AM Masses at Saint Luke the Evangelist in Slidell. This is for the 11th Sunday in ordinary time. The scripture readings on which this is based can be found by clicking this link.

On October 2, 2006, Charles Roberts took 10 little girls hostage in an Amish one-room schoolhouse in West Nickel Mines Pennsylvania.  He shot eight of ten, killing five, then turned the gun on himself.

"Follow the money" is a catchphrase popularized by the 1976 drama-documentary motion picture All The President's Men. It brings to mind one of my pet peeves - state and local politician touting the latest national retail development as economic development.
