At the end of  my 1st grade year, my dad was transferred to a Naval base north of Chicago. There were wide open spaces to play and countless children as playmates.  Kickball had teams of 20. Baseball games with 15 on a team were normal. I had more friends than you can imagine and was very happy.  Then my father was transferred to a base in Japan. The family moved to New Orleans without him. My friends, my dad, and my happiness were all gone.

For Christmas when I was 11, I got my first new bike ever.

The word content comes from the Latin contentus which roughly means  completely satisfied with your situation.  As a youngster, I earned money by gardening and lawn care in the neighborhood.

If you look up the definition of the word  protest  then it would probably be technically correct to consider what  former NFL player Colin Kaepernick did last year and what NFL players did on the weekend of  September 24th a protest of sorts.  It quickly becomes murky, however that these were legitimate protests.

If you ask the question “What’s the best material with which to construct a building.?” the answer you get would likely depend on the background and mindset of the person you asked.  A metalworker or welder, would probably want to construct it out of steel.

Even as a very young man, everyone knew he would end up no good.  He skipped school.  He was always big and powerful for his age, growing to 6’ 6” by his early teens.  He was a bully, and beat up on smaller children. His mother was even terrified of him.

Analogies and metaphors are often used make complicated things seem simple.  From the movie Forrest Gump, you will likely remember “Life is like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you’re gonna get”.  This is a simple explanation a complex issue – sometimes not matter what you do, you cannot control the outcome.  Even when you pick what you think is the chocolate covered caramel, sometimes you bite into the orange-raspberry crème.

The monument to the Battle of Liberty Place

The statue to Gen. Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard at the front of New Orleans City Park

The statue of Confederate General Robert E.
