The following is an approximation of the  homily I delivered  at St. Luke the Evangelist in Slidell, LA for the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A.  The scripture readings on which this is base can be found by clicking here.

Likely most of you have seen a Disney Aladdin movie or TV shows or remember the show “I Dream of Genie”.  The word genie is the English equivalent of the Arabic jinn., a mythical order of created being between angels and humans. The legend of the powerful genie in a lamp who could grant wishes started in the early 1700’s. A French translator of the book Arabian Nights just … made it up… because he thought it would help sell more copies!

Now when we hear the word genie, we think of some all-powerful being who will grant miraculous wishes.
