The following is a close approximation of the homily I delivered for the 3rd Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday) during the  9 and 11 AM Masses at St. Luke the Evangelist Church in Slidell. The scripture readings on which this is based can be found by clicking this link.

At the end of  my 1st grade year, my dad was transferred to a Naval base north of Chicago. There were wide open spaces to play and countless children as playmates.  Kickball had teams of 20. Baseball games with 15 on a team were normal. I had more friends than you can imagine and was very happy.  Then my father was transferred to a base in Japan. The family moved to New Orleans without him. My friends, my dad, and my happiness were all gone.

For Christmas when I was 11, I got my first new bike ever.
