Counterfeit Christianity: Faith Without Works, the Gospels of the Environment and Prosperity
The following is a close approximation of the homily I delivered September 15 and 16 at St Luke the Evangelist Church in Slidell. The scripture readings on which this is based for the 24th Sunday in Ordinary time can be found at this link
According to the International Chamber of Commerce, last year US consumers spent almost $1 trillion on fake or counterfeit goods. Counterfeit goods exist in almost every sector, including clothing, handbags, auto parts, alcoholic beverages, cell phones and pharmaceuticals. It used to be easy to spot a counterfeit item. I remember when I was a young engineer, one of my coworkers came to work with a Rolex watch. When he showed it to me, I read R-O-L-L-E-X written across the face. The misspelling and the cheap material were dead giveaways.
