The following is a close approximation of the homily I delivered at the 6 PM Mass on Sunday, January 20, 2019 for the 2nd Sunday in ordinary time. The scripture readings on which this is based can be found by clicking this link.

I am going to give you a list of three facts and give you a moment to think about what they all have in common:

·         Bananas grow on banana trees ·         Catholics worship the Virgin Mary ·         The Declaration of independence was signed on July 4, 1776    Does anyone know what these facts have in common?

Each of these facts is, in fact, not a fact but are false statements.  For gardeners, or those who have a little knowledge of botany, you know that banana trees are not trees but giant herbs, related to the ginger plant.
