Working Up A Good Thirst:How Will You Quench Yours?
I delivered this homily at St Luke the Evangelist Church in Slidell during the weekend of March 14-15. The scripture readings on which this is based for the 3rd Sunday of Lent can be found at this link.
When I was about 10 years old, I fell in love with the sport of basketball. I couldn’t shoot or dribble. All I could do was rebound and play defense – two parts of the sport where effort can overcome a lack of skill. When I was 12, I decided that to get better, I had to go where the good players played. I got on my bike and went looking for games, sometimes in parts of the City people refer to as “the hood.”
The game played was called “winners.” If you won, your team stayed on the court and kept playing. You lose, you sit.
